Michelangelo didn't want to paint the Sistine Chapel. He was a sculptor. The Pope forced him to take the job, so Michelangelo brought in a team of expert painters from Florence to help him. He watched them work for a few weeks. Their work was fine, but it wasn't excellent. It didn't meet his standard.

So he fired all of them. He locked the doors to the chapel, and scraped their wet plaster off the ceiling. He decided to paint the entire massive vault himself.

It took him four brutal years of standing on scaffolding. The paint dripped into his eyes, and his back arched permanently. He created a masterpiece because he refused to outsource his duty to people who didn't care as much as he did.

Marcus Aurelius ran an empire. He constantly dealt with incompetent generals and corrupt politicians. He had to remind himself not to get distracted by their failures. He couldn't control their work ethic. He could only control his own.

When you know what the standard is, you have to uphold it. Sometimes, that may even mean you have to do the heavy lifting yourself. If you delegate your duty to someone who doesn't care, you're the one failing the duty.

Errors & Corrections

• Don't lower the bar. You want to finish a project quickly. You let your team turn in sloppy work. You just accept it. Don't do that. Scrape the plaster off and do it right.
• Don't complain about the lonely work. You fired the assistants. Now you have to do the work yourself. Don't play the victim. You chose the high standard. Accept the isolation that comes with it.
• Don't expect them to care like you do. It's your vision. They are just clocking in. Stop getting angry when they don't share your obsession. Just take the brush and paint.

Applications to Modern Life

Work

You hire a contractor to build out your project. They deliver a terrible product. Don't let the project end with it anyway just because you paid for it. Fire them. Learn the details of the work yourself. Build a simple solution that actually works.

Leadership

A leader delegates tasks, but a leader never delegates the ultimate responsibility for quality. If the team can't hit the mark, step in. Show them exactly how the sausage is made.

Athleticism & Sport

You hire a personal trainer. They give you a generic, lazy routine. Fire them. Study sports science yourself. Build your own program. Nobody cares about your knees as much as you do.

Politics

You donate to a political action committee. You expect them to fix your town. They waste the money on expensive dinners. Stop outsourcing your citizenship. Run for city council.

Social Media

You hire an agency to run your accounts. They post robotic, lifeless corporate trash. Fire them today. Write one genuine post a week yourself. Authenticity doesn't scale.

Interpersonal Relationships

You buy your partner a generic gift card for their birthday because you're busy. You outsourced your affection. It feels cheap. Take an hour and write a real letter by hand.
