"Don't talk about your principles. Show them."

schedule3 min readEpictetus

As commander of Apollo 11, Neil Armstrong was the first human to walk on the moon after landing a spacecraft with seconds of fuel left. He didn't brag about it.

When he came back to Earth, he didn't demand the spotlight, or write endless books talking about how smart he was. He went to work as a professor and taught engineering. He let the achievement speak for itself. He was a pilot and an engineer, and he did the job he was trained to do.

Epictetus noticed a problem with his students. They loved to memorize philosophy and quote old Greeks at dinner parties. They wanted everyone to know how enlightened they were.

Epictetus told them to shut up and used a gross but memorable metaphor. A sheep doesn't vomit grass to prove it ate. It digests the grass, and turns it into wool and milk.

If you read a book on productivity, don't run to social media to tell the world about it. Digest it. Produce better work. If you study Stoicism, don't tell your friends you're a Stoic. Just stay calm when things don't go your way.

Talk is cheap. It feeds your ego. Action is the only proof that you actually learned anything.

Errors & Corrections

  • Don't announce your habits. You started waking up at 5 AM. You don't need to post a photo of your alarm clock. Just wake up and do the work. The results will eventually show.
  • Don't lecture your friends. You found a new diet or a new philosophy. You want to convert everyone around you. Stop. It's annoying. Change your own life. If they want to know your secret, they'll ask.
  • Don't confuse knowing with doing. You can memorize the entire dictionary. It doesn't make you a writer. Knowledge is just grass. You have to do the hard work of turning it into wool.

Applications to Modern Life

Work

You want a promotion. You spend all your time telling your boss how hard you work. You talk about your potential. Stop talking. Finish the project ahead of schedule. Let the completed work sit on their desk. The work makes the argument for you.

Leadership

A weak leader talks constantly about their vision. They hold meetings to discuss the company culture. A strong leader just models the culture. They show up early. They take the blame for mistakes. They produce the standard they want to see.

Athleticism & Sport

You buy the expensive gear. You talk about your marathon training plan at every dinner party. Stop talking about action and go run in the dark. Let your race time tell the story.

Politics

Politicians make endless promises. They talk about what they'll do when they get power. Watch their voting record instead. Pay attention to the legislation they actually draft. Ignore the speech and look at the wool.

Social Media

This is a trap. The platform is designed to make you all talk. You post the book cover instead of reading the book. You post the gym selfie instead of lifting the weight. Put the phone away. Do the work in private.

Interpersonal Relationships

You tell your partner you'll change. You promise you'll be more patient. The words mean nothing. They have heard them before. Stop promising. Just be patient the next time things get stressful.

Maxims

  • Produce wool.
  • Keep it to yourself.
  • Let the results talk.

In-depth Concepts

Praxis (Action)

The Stoics valued praxis over theory. Theory is just the blueprint. You can't live in a blueprint. You have to build the house.

Keno-doxia (Empty Glory)

This is the Greek term for vanity or empty pride. It's what drives us to brag. The Stoic sees keno-doxia as a vulnerability. If you need other people to applaud your actions, you're a slave to their opinion.
